Put Power on Your Plate…
If you’re looking for the Food Guide Pyramid, you probably won’t find it. MyPyramid, introduced last spring by the USDA, replaces the Food Guide Pyramid guidance system. MyPyramid features a new graphic, and messages designed to help you enjoy foods from all food groups that are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. MyPyramid includes recommendations for balancing regular physical activity with food intake. It also features an interactive website www.mypyramid.gov, that allows you to personalize the recommendations, make sample menus, and it offers other tips to ensure you’re getting the nutrient-rich “power foods” your body needs to stay healthy.

“Power foods” are choices within each food group that have more nutrients per calorie than other foods. These foods typically include:

  • Brightly-colored fruits, such as blueberries, strawberries, and oranges.
  • Vibrant green, red, and orange vegetables like tomatoes, spinach, and orange peppers.
  • Whole-grain or fortified, fiber rich bread and pasta products.
  • Nonfat cheese or low-fat cheese and yogurt.
  • Lean proteins like lean beef, eggs, and seafood.
