National Womens Health & Fitness Day is an annual health-promotion event for women of all ages, held on the last Wednesday in September. The goals of this event are to focus attention on the importance of regular physical activity, and to create awareness about the health of women.
According to the American Heart Association, physical activity and fitness are important to women because cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women. One in two women suffers from heart disease or stroke. The risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke can be reduced with regular physical activity of at least 30 minutes per day. Some studies also have shown that physical activity lowers the risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
