Welcome to the K-State Housing and Dining Services community!

Housing and Dining Services is a self-operated department with functional units responsible for dining services, residence life, apartment living (families, as well as single undergraduate, graduate and nontraditional students), facilities management, information systems and business operations. Residents, through their contracts, are the primary source of revenue for all departmental functions. Our department receives no state or federal funds.

Contract/Assignment Information

Your housing assignment is based on the date your contract and payment are received by Housing and Dining Services, the information provided on the contract and space availability. Final decisions on hall, room and roommate assignments are made by the department.

Assignment requests only indicate preferences. Although an attempt is made to accommodate all requests, there is no guarantee. The contract is not for a particular space or type of housing.

A nondisabled student occupying a room that may be needed for a student with a disability may be required to change rooms if there is a need to use the assigned room.

Returning residents are given the opportunity to select a space for the next year via the RSVP process that typically takes place in February of each year.

Transfer Information

If your initial hall or room preference is not met, you may inquire about the hall or room transfer process at the front desk in your hall after the official hall opening.

Transfers are made when space is available. Changing rooms without permission from your residence life coordinator is not permitted.

Temporary Housing

Should regular space in the residence halls become limited, Housing and Dining Services may assign you to a temporary space in another Housing and Dining Services facility. Once a permanent space is identified, you will be required to either accept the space and move within 48 hours or cancel your contract. Should you choose to cancel your contract, you will pay the appropriate daily rate without any cancellation fee. This waiving of the cancellation fee applies only to the initial move from temporary space. When assignment to a permanent space is accepted, the cancellation provision of the contract is enforced.

Special Accommodations

If you have a disability, chronic health condition or an assistance animal, it is important to contact the Student Access Center , who will facilitate all requests for special accommodations. A student requesting special accommodations is encouraged to schedule a hall tour before making any housing decisions. Housing and Dining Services will consult with the Student Access Center on all special accommodation requests.

Dietary Accommodations

If you have special dietary needs, you should contact a Housing and Dining Services dietitian before making a housing decision. Please reference the Nutrition and Allergy Information Page on our website for more details.

Residence Hall Choices

We offer many different types of living arrangements in the residence halls, including coeducational and all-female facilities, quiet floors, the RESPECT program, suites, break housing, a house for honors students and Smurthwaite Leadership/Scholarship House for women. Learn more about each hall, check out floor plans, and take virtual tours .

Policies

It is important that students understand what is expected of them while living on campus. Take time to review the residence hall policies.

Resident's Room and Remodeling Information

Each resident is provided with an extra-long twin bed frame (with materials to loft the bed), mattress (extra-long twin 81" long) and pad, desk and chair, storage drawers, closet space, window blinds, wastebasket and recycle bin.

All furniture provided, including loftable bed frames, bed ends and mattresses must remain in the room. Lofts that are not supplied by Housing and Dining Services are prohibited. All provided beds can be lofted without purchasing a special loft kit. The provided lofts can be set up in multiple ways, but they must be set up within the guidelines set by Housing and Dining Services. Safety bars must be in place if the bed is lofted. The lofts provided may not be altered. Requests for specific bed types cannot be met.

Rooms may be individualized, but must comply with safety and fire codes and may not damage any room surface or furniture. Construction is prohibited in a resident's room. Elevated floors or other platforms are prohibited. Nothing can restrict the room exit, and a 36-inch minimum passageway to the door must be maintained. Nothing can be placed within 36 inches of the front of the heating/AC unit, sprinkler head or smoke detector. Modifications to the electrical, lighting or mechanical systems are prohibited. Posters are allowed in a resident's room, but removable tape that does not mar walls, woodwork and ceilings must be used. Only pushpins may be used on sheetrock walls. Any type of tape that pulls the paint and paper off may result in a damage charge. Prohibited materials include, but are not limited to, nails, screws, duct/cellophane tape, double-stick pads and poster putty. These materials cause damage and may result in repair costs to the resident. Damages to a room or its contents not recorded on the room condition card given to a student at check-in are charged to the student and/or roommate(s).
