Living at Boyd Hall
Some fun facts about Boyd Hall:
- Boyd Hall was originally opened in the fall of 1951.
- The building was originally named Northwest Hall, because it was located Northwest of Van Zile Hall. Ten years later on January 14, 1961, the hall was dedicated in honor of Mrs. Mamie Boyd.
- Mrs. Boyd was a devoted K-State fan, attending all of the football and basketball games. She was president of the Women's Kansas Day Club and active member in the Alumni Association.
- In the early 1960's women of Boyd Hall had to be back in the hall no later than 7PM or request special permission to be out late.
- There used to be a very strict dress code policy with meals in the basement dining room. Women were required to wear skirts and dresses to meals. They could wear slacks to lunch if the temperature outside was below 10o and they had worn them to class that day. They could wear their bathrobes to Sunday morning breakfast...if they snuck down the back stairwell.
- The front desk used to answer all incoming calls and transfer them to the “floor phones” where the residents would have to go to talk on the phone. The desk would also dial all outgoing calls.
- Houseboys used to live in Boyd Hall in what is now the dining center dietician office. They did general maintenance and escorted males out of the building.
- For many of the years at the beginning of its history, there were also two-three staff members on every floor, instead of the one as it exists now.
Many changes have taken place in Boyd Hall since it first opened. Several quadruple rooms have been converted to triple rooms and former closets are now single rooms. A tunnel connects Boyd Hall with Van Zile and Putnam. At one time, meals were served in the basement, but it now has a TV area, study rooms, an exercise room, a computer room, and student suites. The exercise room has recently gone under a few updates with new yoga mats and ball, weights, and exercise DVDs. HGB has recently purchased several new board games for the ladies of Boyd Hall to have game nights!
Boyd Hall takes part in many activities such as the K-State Homecoming festivities, Winter Lights celebration, floor wars, intramural games and frisbee on the front lawn. Many life long friendships begin here and women are proud to be apart of the Boyd history.
