Residence Halls

We at K-State believe the best answer to a student's question "Where shall I live?" is the residence halls.

Studies have shown that students who spend their first one or two years in the residence halls demonstrate the following:

  • Tend to continue (and finish) their degrees in college in higher numbers than students living off campus.
  • Receive better grades than students who commute from off campus.

Lifestyle Choices

Housing and Dining Services offers a wide variety of living arrangements from which to choose. Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the residence halls. This includes all lobbies, lounges and dining centers. Individual halls set guidelines on smoking perimeters outside the halls. Coeducational halls provide housing for men and women students on separate wings/floors of the halls (except Van Zile). Intensive study/quiet floors are available to meet the student's need for extended quiet hours in the halls. Intensive study/quiet floors are available in Ford, Goodnow, Haymaker, Marlatt, Moore and West. A special contractual agreement signed at check-in is required.

Academic Cluster Floors

Academic cluster floors, for students in four academic colleges, provide convenience for students to study together and facilitate specialized programming. Clusters are available in:
  • Agriculture - Haymaker
  • Architecture - Goodnow and Marlatt
  • Business Administration - Moore
  • Engineering - Goodnow and Marlatt
  • Leadership - Moore
  • PreHealth - Haymaker
  • Community Service - West
  • Putnam R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Program (Residents Encouraging: Study, Peaceful Environment, and Community Thinking)
    • The R.E.S.P.E.C.T. program makes Putnam more than a quiet hall. Basic guidelines include:

      (1) Residents organizing and participating in programs and activities.
      (2) Maintaining a quiet living/learning environment.
      (3) Respecting each other and all physical facilities.

A special contractual agreement signed at check-in is required.

Suite-Style Living

Suite-style living options are offered in addition to traditional rooms. These options are limited and are assigned on a seniority basis for one to four occupants per room. Suites offer amenities such as private or semiprivate bathrooms and carpet. There is an additional charge for living in a suite, which is assessed on assignment. Additional charges range from $380.00 (four-person suite) to $758.00 (one-person suite) per semester. Refer to the specialized housing options section of the contract.

Continuous Housing

A continuous housing option is available for an additional cost, but ONLY in Moore. Students signing a contract addendum will not be required to move from their assigned room in Moore during scheduled university breaks. All other halls are closed during scheduled university breaks.

Smurthwaite Leadership/Scholarship Program

Smurthwaite Leadership/Scholarship Program provides an opportunity for female students to develop leadership skills. Smurthwaite Leadership/Scholarship House offers a small group living community. Smurthwaite residents receive a $430.00 savings in room and board costs per semester. They are expected to participate in the Women's Leadership Program and contribute kitchen or house-related work and phone duty each week. A special application process and separate contract are required for acceptance and assignment.

Any female student interested in Smurthwaite Leadership/Scholarship House, contact Housing and Dining Services for a Smurthwaite application packet. Acceptance and assignment is limited; therefore, it is also best to complete the Academic Year Housing and Dining Services Contract for another option.

Graduate Students

Graduate students are welcome to live in the residence halls or Jardine Apartments. Early application and submission of a contract are encouraged if you desire an assignment to a specific area.
