General Questions

Q. What is ResNet?

A. ResNet is the network support group that provides assistance to students living in the residence halls and Jardine Apartments at K-State.

ResNet can assist you with network registration, connection issues, and general technical support for your computer, printer, or gaming device. ResNet does not administer or control access to the K-State network. The primary function of ResNet is to provide IT support for students and staff under Housing and Dining Services.

We do not control phone or cable services. We also do not support Webmail, K-State Online, or K-State eIDs. For information on those services, please see below.

Q. Who do I contact for phone service or cable television?
A. Please contact Computing and Telecommunications Services to activate these services.
Q. I can't login to KSU Webmail or K-State Online. What should I do?
A. Please contact Information Technology Assistance Center (iTAC) with these issues.
Q. I am having issues with my eID. What should I do?
A. Please contact Information Technology Assistance Center (iTAC) for assistance with eID issues.
Q. Do I need to bring a computer to K-State?

A. Having a computer is highly suggested, but not required. There are computer labs available in the residence halls and around campus.

Computer labs with network access are located in every residence hall, including Smurthwaite Leadership/Scholarship House, and are for exclusive use by residents of that hall. Computer labs are also located near the Kramer Academic Resource Center (ARCK) and the Derby Academic Resource Center (DARC). You must use your eID and password to log in to computers in the labs.

A key to each lab may be checked out from the front desk upon presenting and leaving a valid KSU ID card with the staff at the desk. Computers are checked out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Priority use of computers will be given to academic work. Before using the computer, check to verify that all the equipment is in good condition and report any damages immediately to avoid being held responsible.

Q. I'm buying a new computer, what are your recommendations?

A. K-State's 2009 computer recommendations may be found on the K-State Computer Recommendations page.

Check with your academic department for further information on what specifications your computer may need. We require that you have a computer with a legal copy of a supported Operating System.

Q. What operating systems does K-State support?

A. We support Windows XP, Windows Vista, Linux, and Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard).

Note: Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) will not be supported until their official release. Windows 7 is scheduled for release on October 22, 2009 and OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is scheduled for release in September 2009. K-State will support these operating systems after these dates.

Q. Why does BitTorrent or other Peer 2 Peer (P2P) software not work?

A. As K-State's network is provided primarily as an academic resource, Peer 2 Peer (P2P) applications and file sharing are strictly prohibited.

This type of network activity has been prevented from functioning on the K-State network. Any user found engaging in this type of activity will be blocked from network access. If blocked, you may have your internet privileges revoked among other possible academic, criminal, civil, and legal sanctions. Examples of prohibited P2P software include (but are not limited to): LimeWire, BearShare, uTorrent, BitComet, and Transmission.

Q. Do I need to purchase a hub or router?

A. Hubs are available for check out free of charge from ResNet. You must use a hub provided by ResNet. Any additional networking equipment or devices are strictly prohibited.

Prohibited network devices include, but are not limited to, personal hubs, routers, switches, NAT devices, and servers. Use of any prohibited device will result in being blocked from network access.

Q. Where can I check out a hub?
A. You may check out a hub from the font desk of your hall during move in, or from the ResNet Help Desk in Derby 133A at any time.
Q. Where can I get an Ethernet cord?
A. You may purchase an Ethernet cord from Quick Cats, the Union Computer Store, and other locations.

Wireless Questions

Q. How can I connect to the k-state.res wireless network?

A. Obtain the wireless key by logging in here with your eID and password.

Once you have obtained the wireless key, try and connect to the network. When the connection dialog comes up it will prompt you for the wireless key. Simply type the key you obtained into the prompt and you will have access to the k-state.res wireless network. Please see How to Connect to Wireless for more information.

Q. Where is wireless internet available at K-State?

A. Wireless is available around most locations on campus.

Wireless network hotspots include the Jardine Apartments, residence halls, the K-State Student Union, Hale Library, and most other buildings on campus. A complete list of wireless locations on campus can be found here.

Q. What type of wireless is supported?

A. The A/G bands are active, however the B band is disabled.

Any device utilizing a B-Only wireless adapter will not work on the K-State network within the residence halls or Jardine Apartments. The B band was disabled in order to improve wireless quality for the large number of users in the residence halls.

Registration Questions

Q. Why can I only access K-State web sites from the computer in my room or apartment?

A. You probably need to register your computer for K-State network access. To register for network access, go here.

You must register your computer to gain full access to the K-State network and view pages outside of K-State.edu.
Q. Why do I need to register my computer for network access?

A. Registration helps maintain network security and is necessary to help ensure that your computer remains secure.

Computers connected to the K-State network must be running a valid, licensed operating system supported by K-State. In addition, you must have all current security patches and updates for your operating system, and use the free antivirus software provided by K-State. Registration of student computers requires acceptance of the User Agreement, Residential Networking technology policies, and the K-State Technology Usage Policies. By requiring these items before connecting to the network, we can help provide a safe and secure network connection.

For more information, please watch our video.

Q. What is Bradford?

A. Bradford is a network security monitoring system that allows K-State to determine if your computer meets all security requirements.

Bradford utilizes the Client Security Agent software to ensure that your computer meets all security requirements during registration.
