How to Connect to Wireless
Wireless is provided in all of the residence hall rooms and Jardine Apartments, in addition to other areas on campus.
In the Residence Halls and Jardine Apartments:
- Connect to K-State.res
- This connection will require either the WEP key, available here, or using WPA2 and logging in with your eID and password.
- If using Windows Vista, set the location as "Public" when prompted.
- If your computer is not yet registered, you will be able to go through the network registration process, and gain full access to the internet.
On Campus:
- K-State.res is only available in the residence halls and Jardine Apartments.
- K-State.net is available across campus, but is not available within the halls or Jardine. This network does not require registration.
To Connect a Game Device:
- You will need to register your gaming system using the Ethernet connection in your room or apartment before connecting to wireless.
- Once registered, you may connect the device to the K-State.res network with the WEP key, available here.
- Currently the Nintendo Wii is not supported on the K-State Wireless network. More information may be found in our FAQ.
- The Sony PSP and Nintendo DS will not work on the K-State network. More information may be found in our FAQ.
To Connect a PDA/Smart Phone:
- To connect an iPhone/iPod Touch, please see our FAQ.
- All other PDA/Smart phones will need to register online. As these are added manually, it may take up to two weeks before the device is registered.
- After the device is registered, connect to K-State.res with the WEP key, available here.
How to Connect to Ethernet
Ethernet is provided in all of the residence hall rooms and Jardine Apartments.
In the Residence Halls:
- There will be a port on the wall near the closet, along with a phone jack. Make sure you use the data (Ethernet) port for your computer.
- Ford and Haymaker Halls will have two data ports. All other halls will have one data port.
- Hubs to extend the ports are available for check out at any time from the ResNet Help Desk in Derby 133A. Please remember that personal routers are strictly prohibited!
- After connecting the Ethernet to your computer, your internet browser should auto direct you to network registration. if you are registered, you should have full access to the internet upon connecting to Ethernet.
In Jardine Apartments:
- Ethernet is provided in all apartments.
- Traditional Apartments should have a cable coming in through the living room window.
- Renovated and new construction buildings should have a single Ethernet port below the window in the living room.
- Any other jacks in the apartment are for phones only. The Ethernet port is only in the living room.
- Hubs to extend the ports are available for check out at any time from the ResNet Help Desk in Derby 133A.
- After connecting the Ethernet to your computer, your internet browser should auto direct you to network registration. if you are registered, you should have full access to the internet upon connecting to Ethernet.
To Connect Multiple Devices using Ethernet:
- Plug each device you wish to use on Ethernet directly into the wall port in your room or apartment and individually confirm that each device is registered before using a hub. If a device is successfully registered, it will connect to the internet with no issues. If it is not registered, you will need to register the device before continuing.
- Gaming devices requiring a wired connection will need to be registered through the Ethernet connection in this manner.
- After you have confirmed that each device is registered, you may connect your hub to the Ethernet port in your room or apartment. Plug each device, one at a time, into the hub and double check that everything is still registered and working as you go.
- Hubs are available for check out at any time from the ResNet Help Desk in Derby 133A.
How to Print to the Front Desk Printers
Please Note that there will be a 10 ¢ charge for every page printed to the laser printers. (Note: In these instructions you will see words in italics, these will represent a button or menu that needs to be clicked on. Also you will see words in bold these will be commands or information that you will need to type.)
- Click on the Start button, and then Control Panel. In Control Panel, go to Printers.
Once the Printers window is open, you will need to click on Add Printer. It should look like this:
After this window comes up, click on Next >.
- You should then get a window that looks similar to this, on this window you want the radio button to be on Local Printer, then click Next >.
- Next you will get this screen and you will need to select Create a new port and the type is Standard TCP/IP as shown below. Click Next >.
- This window will apear then. Select Next >.
- Enter the appropiate DNS name for your hall in the Printer Name or IP Address field. Click Next >.
For example, to specify the DNS name for the printer in Boyd, enter hdsps-boyd.housing.ksu.edu in the 'Printer Name or IP Address' field.
(Refer to the table below for the correct DNS name for your hall)

- Next click Finish.

- Next you will need to select the driver for the printer. The Manufacturer is Hewlett-Packard and the Printer is HP LaserJet 4240 PCL 6.
(Since the printer is newer than the one Windows has locally installed, you would need to click 'Windows Update' for windows to get an update)
Click Next >.

- Name the printer and select if you want it as your default printer or not. Click Next >.

- Make sure Do not share this printer is selected. Click Next >.
- Select No when asked if you want to print a test page. Click Next >.
- You have installed the printer. Click Finish.

To print to the printer that you just created, simply select this printer when it comes time to print.
Updating Microsoft Windows XP
1. Click on Start > All Programs > Windows Update

2. Windows Internet Explorer will come up with the Windows Update site.
3. Click on Custom.

4. Select all updates from the side menu.

5. Install all updates

6. Accept the EULA.

7. You may have to restart your computer when the process is complete.

8. Repeat until no updates remain to complete the process.

Updating Microsoft Windows Vista
1. Click the start button on the bottom left corner of the screen.
2. On the start menu select "All Programs" and click the "Windows Update" entry. The following Window will pop-up.

3. Click “Check for updates” in the left pane of the window. Windows update will check for updates, and turn the green box in the main window yellow or red and display a button that says “Install Updates” if there are any updates available.
4. If updates are available, click "Install Now" in the yellow or red box that appears in the "Windows Updates" window.
5. Restart if necessary and repeat this process until no further updates are found.
Note: If optional updates are available that will not automatically install, there will be text on the right side of the window that says “View Optional Updates” which you can click, select, and install any optional updates.
Updating Mac OS X
- From the Apple menu, choose Software Update... .

- Mac OS X 10.3.x only: Click the Check Now button.
- Software Update checks for available updates. In the Software Update window, select the items you want to install, then click Install. Usually, you should install all available updates.
- Enter an administrator account name and password when prompted.
- After installation finished, restart the computer if a restart is required.
You can repeat these steps to see if more updates are now available. Because some software updates are prerequisites for others, you may need to repeat these steps several times to complete the software update sequence.
Note: Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard can automatically run Software Update checks in the background and let you know when an update is available for your computer.
How to Update Trend Micro Antivirus
1. Right click on the blue Trend Micro Icon on the Task Bar.

2. Click on Update Now
3. Click on Update Now on the new screen that appeared.

4. Click on Close when the process is complete.
