Before You Move-In

How ResNet Can Help You

ResNet is the technical support group that assists students living in the residence halls and Jardine Apartments at K-State. ResNet is here to help make your technology experience with move-in as smooth and seamless as possible. ResNet can assist you with network registration, connection issues, and general technical support for your computer, printer, or gaming device.

Important Information

Buying a New Computer

K-State's 2009 computer recommendations may be found on the K-State Computer Recommendations page.

Please make sure that your computer has an up-to-date and legal copy of one of these operating systems supported by K-State:

  • Microsoft Windows XP and Vista
  • Apple Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), 10.5 (Leopard)
  • Most modern distributions of Linux such as: Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, openSUSE, Gentoo.
  • Note: Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) will not be supported until their official releases later this fall.

Buying Tips

  • Do NOT buy antivirus software. K-State's antivirus software is required, and available via free download.
  • Antivirus software from other vendors must be uninstalled prior to installing K-State's required antivirus software.
  • Double check price quotes. Sometimes prices don't include a keyboard, mouse, monitor, or a K-State recommended operating system.
  • Printers are usually sold separately. Before you buy compare prices, features, and cartridge-replacement costs.
  • Networked printers (Wireless, Bluetooth, and Ethernet) Printers are not supported on the K-State network. You will need a cable to connect your printer to your computer.
  • Don't Forget the Cables. Ensure you have everything needed to connect your devices, including power cords, USB and Ethernet cables.
  • Make sure you obtain installation disks for your operating system. Some computer vendors do not include operating system disks with the purchase of a new computer. You may have to request these disks from your comptuer vendor upon purcahse of a new system.

Department/College Requirements

  • Before any purchase, check the department/college recommendations for your field of study.
  • Apple Mac computers are recommended for Art, Education, and Journalism majors.

Things to Bring

  • Laptop or Desktop Computer
  • Computer Security Lock (or some form of anti-theft device)
  • Ethernet Cord Cat 5, 5e, or 6 (20ft or longer recommended)
  • Flash Drive or External Hard-Drive (2gb or larger recommended)
  • Peripherals (Keyboard, Mouse, etc.)
  • Printer (optional)
  • Additional Cabling or Wires for Your Computer and Other Devices (TV, DVD player, stereo, etc.)
  • All Software Installation Media (i.e. system restore disks, operating systems disks, etc.)

NOTE: Please make sure you bring all installation disks that came with your computer. ResNet does not provide installation media for any operating systems.

Things NOT to Bring

Please familiarize yourself with K-State's Network Usage Policies. All users of the K-State network are subject to these policies.

Any and all additional networking equipment and devices are strictly prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, personal hubs, routers, switches, NAT devices, and servers. Ethernet and wireless are provided in all of the residence halls and Jardine Apartments. Should you need any additional networking ports in your room, you may check out a hub from ResNet at any time during the semester.

Peer 2 Peer (P2P) applications and file sharing are strictly prohibited. This type of network activity has been prevented from functioning on the K-State network. Any user found engaging in this type of activity will be blocked from network access. If blocked, you may have your internet privileges revoked among other possible academic, criminal, civil, and legal sanctions. Examples of prohibited P2P software include (but are not limited to): LimeWire, BearShare, FrostWire, uTorrent, BitComet, and Transmission.

Networked printers (wireless, Bluetooth, or Ethernet) and print servers are not supported on the K-State network. All printers must be used through a direct computer connection such as USB, Parallel, or Serial. Running a print server will result in being blocked from network access.

Prepare and Register Your Computer in Advance

Make the K-State network registration process go faster by preparing and registering your computer for network access before you arrive! Pre-registering your computer for network access helps ease the transition from your home network to the K-State network. Registration is necessary to help ensure that your computer and the K-State network remains secure.

For information on pre-registering your computer for network access, please see our information about Network Registration.

When You Arrive: Operation PC 2009

Operation PC is an event organized and operated by the IT groups on campus in an effort to provide assistance with network registration and general computer set up during move-in. This event focuses primarily on assisting students with completing the necessary steps to successfully register on the network, including assistance with operating system updates and installing and updating the K-State antivirus software. Operation PC is conducted every fall semester and has proven over the last six years to be an effective way to provide support services to all students involved with residence hall and Jardine Apartments move-in.

ResNet staff are available during Operation PC and throughout the semester to provide support to all residents in the residence halls and Jardine Apartments.
