What happens if I don't get enough roommates by the end of the semester?

If you are preferencing an apartment in Jardine, it is up to the person preferencing the apartment to select roommates. Jardine staff will not assign roommates to you. If the apartment is not filled to capacity, those living in the apartment will still be responsible for the full monthly rent. If you are preferencing a space in the Residence Halls, it is HIGHLY recommended you have filled your space by the end of the semester. Failure to do so could result in either losing your preference or receiving an assigned roommate in the fall.

How does preferencing a shared-bathroom suite work?

Some of the shared-bathroom suites can be preferenced by either gender, but BOTH rooms must have the same gender. The person with the highest priority gets to preference one of the two rooms, and the gender of the two rooms is set to that person's gender unless someone of the opposite gender with a higher priority gets into one of the rooms.

What is RSVP?

RSVP stands for Resident Space Virtual Preferencing. It allows current residents who will be living on campus next year to preference a space of their choice and to select their roommate(s). The RSVP period is divided into four phases. In phase one, residents are able to preference the space in which they currently live. In the next phase, students who live in the Residence Halls are able to preference a space in the residence hall in which they currently live and residents who live in Jardine are able to preference any apartment in Jardine through an administrative process. In the third phase, a resident can preference a space in any residence hall, or any apartment in Jardine for which they are eligible. In phase four, RSVP is open to any K-State student wanting to live in the Residence Halls. After each phase, spaces that have been preferenced will be "locked" so the resident cannot be bumped from their preferenced space.

How do I use RSVP?

Once you have filled out the online reapplication for Residence Hall Contract/Jardine Agreement, you will be allowed to log in to the system. There you will have the ability to preference a space and add roommate(s). Depending on which phase RSVP is in (see the previous question to learn about phases), a student will be able to choose a Residence Hall, floor and, in some cases, a wing to view the available spaces. For Jardine a resident will be able to choose a neighborhood, building, and floor to view the available apartments.

When does RSVP begin and end?

RSVP occurs during the spring semester. Please see the RSVP home page for the start and end dates of each phase. RSVP has several dates throughout the semester when preferences are locked and posted. For Residence Halls, it closes at the end of phase four. For the Jardine Apartments, it closes at the end of phase two.

What space can I preference?

The spaces you can preference are dependent on which phase RSVP is in (see first question), and also on your eligibility to live in Jardine Apartments (see question below). During the first phase, you have the ability to preference the space in which you currently live. During the second phase, you may preference any available space in the Residence Hall in which you currently live. If you live in the Jardine Apartments, during the second phase you are able to preference any available apartment through an administrative transfer process. During the third phase, you can preference any available space in any of the Residence Halls or any in Jardine apartment for which you are eligible (see eligibility question below). During the fourth phase, you are able to preference any available space in any of the Residence Halls. Obvious restrictions are spaces that only allow the opposite gender and spaces that are unable to be preferenced (bathrooms, staff rooms, closets, etc.).

What roommate(s) can I request?

If you are choosing to live in the Residence Halls, persons you can request for roommate(s) are divided into two groups: those already in the RSVP system (someone who has already filled out an Application for Residence Hall Contract/Jardine Agreement), and off-campus students (including incoming first-year students). To request a roommate already in the RSVP system, all you need is their Wildcat ID number. For an off-campus student, you need to provide a Wildcat ID number, name and e-mail address so an invitation can be sent to them. If you are choosing to live in the Jardine Apartments, you can select the roommate types above, or you can choose to add your family members as roommates, in which case you only need their names and types (spouse or child), and for children you must specify a birth date. NOTE: A person who has a space preferenced CANNOT join another space as a roommate until he "drops" his current space preference.

Why did I lose the space I had preferenced?

A space preference can be lost for several reasons. First, if someone with a higher priority wants your space, you can be "bumped" from the space and put on the waiting list for the space. If you share a bathroom with another room and the rooms can be of either gender, a person of the opposite gender with a higher priority can bump either you or the preferencer of the other room, resulting in both preferencers getting bumped (the gender of each person preferencing must be the same). The best way to find out why you lost your preference is to check your e-mail; it should explain why you were bumped. If you had your preference locked, there is no way you can lose your preference without dropping the space yourself or by getting pulled into a space on your waiting list that has become available.

How does the priority system work?

Each student is given a priority level based on when they turned in their initial Housing and Dining Services application. So, a resident who turned in their first application three years ago will have higher priority than the resident who turned in their first application two years ago. Also, a person who turned in their first application earlier in the semester will be given higher priority than the person who turned in their first application later in the semester.

How does the waiting list work?

If a person is unable to preference a space because it is preferenced by another user of higher priority, or shares a bathroom with a room preferenced by a user of opposite gender with a higher priority, they are given the option to join a waiting list for that space. Persons are put on the waiting list in order of priority; if the space were to become available, the person with the highest priority automatically gets pulled into the space. NOTE: If you are on a waiting list for a space and currently have another space preferenced: if the space on your waiting list opens up and you are first on the waiting list, you will automatically get pulled into that space (and dropped from your current space). You MUST remove yourself from all waiting lists if you do not desire to lose your preferenced space.

Why is my roommate pending?

A roommate is listed as pending if they have not accepted your invitation to become a roommate, or if you have not accepted their request to join your space.

How do I keep updated on my status?

The RSVP system sends out e-mails any time there is a change in your preference or roommate status. It is important to use an accessible e-mail address and check your e-mail often during the RSVP period!

I won't be able to access RSVP during the RSVP period. What can I do?

Contact your coordinator. They will be able to help you with securing a space for next semester.

Can I preference more than one space at a time?

No, RSVP only allows one preference at a time per resident. To preference a different space (or become a roommate in another space) you have to drop your preferenced space first. However, you may waitlist another space while keeping your current space. NOTE: If you are on a waiting list for a space and currently have a space preferenced: if the space on your waiting list opens up and you are first on the waiting list, you will automatically get pulled into that space (and dropped from your current space). You MUST remove yourself from all waiting lists if you do not desire to lose your preferenced space.

Can I "hold" a space for another resident?

No, holding a space for another resident is inappropriate and could lead to a suspension of privileges.

Do off-campus students have access to RSVP?

Only during the fourth phase. An off-campus student can be invited as a roommate at any time, but they will have restricted access to RSVP (they cannot preference their own space). All current students living in the Residence Halls or the Jardine Apartments have first choice of spaces before off-campus students. To access RSVP during the fourth phase, a current, off-campus student must either call Housing and Dining Services (785-532-6453) or e-mail (housing@ksu.edu) to gain access to the reapplication for Residence Hall Contract/Jardine Agreement (needed to access RSVP).

How many spaces can I have on my waiting list?

You can have up to five spaces on the waiting list at one time.

I was assigned to an overflow space this year, when can I participate in RSVP?

If you have any questions on your status or about the phases, please see your RA or Coordinator.

My roommate and I both want to preference our current space but not as roommates? Who can preference the space?

The roommate with the higher priority number will be the one able to preference the space!
