EOS Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Remote Instruction Period?

The Remote Instruction Period occurs from noon Sunday, Nov. 29, to noon Saturday, Dec. 12. K-State is allowing students to complete classes online if they choose not to return to campus after fall break.

Will campus be open for students during the Remote Instruction Period?

Yes, K-State will continue to offer the services provided to students during the fall semester to help students finish the fall semester strong, specifically these services:

Will all residence halls be operational during the Remote Instruction Period?

Yes, residents will be allowed to stay in their current room during the Remote Instruction Period.

Will there be any change in services in the residence halls during the Remote Instruction Period?

Housekeeping and maintenance work will continue as usual during the Remote Instruction Period. Front desks may have limited hours, but will be available during certain times for package pickup. Every hall will have a staff member on duty 24/7 to assist with emergencies or other needs.

Will meals be available during the Remote Instruction Period? Which dining center will be open?

Yes, meals will be served in Kramer Dining Center during the Remote Instruction Period. Hours of operation may vary. Due to the reduced number of students expected to be on campus, Van Zile Dining Center will not be open. The dining center shuttle will be available to transport students from between the Derby/Van Zile buildings to Kramer and back during meal times.

Do I need to move my belongings out of my room during the breaks or Remote Instruction Period?

No. Residents may leave their personal belongings in their room if they are planning to return after the break(s). Residents who are not here for the breaks or the Remote Instruction Period will not have access to the halls, however, so be sure to take all medication(s) and personal belongings you may need while you’re away.

If I sign up to leave during the Remote Instruction Period, will I have access to my residence hall room?

No. Residents who are not here for the breaks or the Remote Inspection Period will not have access to the halls. Please take all medication(s) and personal belongings you may need while you’re away from your residence hall when you leave campus.

Will my ID work to enter my residence hall if I'm not signed up to return for the Remote Instruction Period?

Only residents who sign up to stay will have access to the residence halls.

Will my ID work to enter the dining center if I'm not signed up to return for the Remote Instruction Period?

Only residents who sign up to stay will have access to the dining centers.

Will my room be accessed while I'm away?

Yes, during break periods we complete routine maintenance on student rooms, including changing heat/AC filters and changing the sails on the Synexis machines for rooms that have them. Housekeeping will also clean suite bathrooms if students clear them as directed by staff.

Will I be charged extra if I stay during the Remote Instruction Period?

No. The Remote Instruction Period is included in your current contract. No additional fees will be charged to stay during this time.

Will I receive a credit for my room and meal plan if I am gone over the Remote Instruction Period?

Yes, residents will receive a pro-rata credit based on their current room and meal plan selection.

When will I receive the credit for this time period?

All credits will be calculated and applied to the resident’s KSIS account at the end of the Remote Instruction Period. If the resident has a balance due in KSIS, this credit will apply to that charge. For students who are returning in the spring semester, this credit will likely apply to their spring housing charge.

If I decide to not return for the Remote Instruction Period, what is required of me to be eligible for a pro-rata credit of my room and meal plan during that time?

A pro-rata credit will only be issued if all of the following conditions are met:

  • Resident completes the online Remote Instruction Period Decision form
  • Resident completes all the required steps to prepare the room for an extended departure
  • Resident completes the verbal room inspection with front desk staff
  • Resident returns all room keys to the front desk
  • Resident is out of the building for the entire 14-day Remote Instruction Period

What if I don't do one of the steps required for the pro-rata credit?

Students who do not fully complete the instructions or return to the residence halls during this time will not be eligible for any credit.

Can I come back and just stay for a night or two during the Remote Instruction Period?

Yes you can, but you would forfeit the pro-rata credit. The Remote Instruction Period is an all-or-nothing option.

What if I change my mind and need to return to the residence halls at any point during the Remote Instruction Period? Does it matter if it is only for one day or one week?

You are welcome to change your mind and return to the residence halls and dining center. Please contact Housing and Dining Services to gain access to your hall and meal plan. Any access to the residence halls or dining centers during this time — regardless of length — will eliminate your eligibility for a pro-rata credit.

Who should I contact if I have additional questions or need help determining which scenario applies to my particular situation?

We understand there is a lot of information to think through. Please feel free to contact Housing and Dining Services at 785-532-6453 or at housing@k-state.edu and one of our staff members will be happy to walk you through your options.

What should I do if I don't plan to live on campus for the spring semester?

Please contact the Housing and Dining Services office at 785-532-6453 or at housing@k-state.edu to discuss the checkout process as well as the financial implications of your cancellation.

What will happen if classes are delayed or moved online for the spring semester?

We do not anticipate that happening, but if it were to occur, we will communicate with students about what they need to know and do.

Remember!

  • Every resident must complete the Remote Instruction Period Decision Form prior to Sunday, Nov. 15.
  • Resident completes all the required steps to prepare the room for an extended departure
  • Resident completes the verbal room inspection with front desk staff
  • Resident returns all room keys to the front desk
  • Resident is out of the building for the entire 14-day Remote Instruction Period

If a resident returns to the residence halls at any time between 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29, and noon Saturday, Dec. 12, they will no longer be eligible for a credit.

All steps must be completed in full for the resident to be eligible for a credit.
