Jardine Apartments Cleaning Instructions
Please read the following apartment cleaning instructions carefully. Not everything listed on these instructions will apply to every apartment. Contact your Neighborhood Staff if you have any questions regarding cleaning procedures. Prior to your scheduled check-out time, you can arrange a PRE-CHECK appointment with your Neighborhood Staff by contacting them at their home phone numbers. This PRE-CHECK is designed to help you identify items that may need extra cleaning so that you will not be charged for cleaning of specific items at the actual check out.
You will need the following cleaning supplies to clean your apartment:

General Information
Recommended & Prohibited Cleaning Supplies
Kitchen
Stove:
- Clean oven and broiler area (including oven racks and grates) following the instructions given on the back of the oven cleaner. Remove the burners and clean with warm, soapy water. It is advisable to lay something on the floor to protect it from oven cleaner. Clean stove, burners, and drip pans underneath the burners. After thoroughly cleaning and drying, replace all stove parts that were removed to their proper place in the stove.
- Clean and remove grease build up from the inside and outside of the range
- The outside stove surfaces should be cleaned with a de-greasing cleaner. If possible, move the stove away from the cabinet and clean the area underneath and in between the stove and cabinet.
Refrigerator:
- After removing all food and perishable items from the refrigerator. DO NOT chip ice with an ice pick, knife, scraper, as these methods can easily puncture the walls and damage the lining of the evaporator. There is a charge if refrigerator is damaged.
- Remove, empty, and wash the drip pan under the refrigerator in clean, warm, soapy water. Replace the drip pan after thoroughly drying it.
- Remove and wash all shelves, racks, drawers, and ice cube trays in warm, soapy water. Wash inside the refrigerator and freezer thoroughly using warm water. Clean the rubber gaskets around the inside edge of the refrigerator door with spray cleaner. The outside surfaces should be cleaned with a spray cleaner. Where appropriate, be sure to clean between the refrigerator and cabinet. Baking soda added to soapy water will help with odors.
- Please leave the refrigerator plugged in and the door closed after cleaning.
Kitchen Cabinets, Counter Tops, Back-Splash, Sink, and Fixtures:
- Remove all food, dishes, and dust. Wipe inside each cabinet with warm, soapy water, including the shelves and walls of the cabinets. Remove drawers, clean inside with warm, soapy water and replace.
- Clean the counter tops, cabinet doors, sink, and fixtures with a non-abrasive cleaner.
- Clean the back-splash and the area between the sink and the cabinet thoroughly. Scrub the top of the cabinets with a non-abrasive de-greasing cleaner to remove any accumulated grease and/or dirt.
Dishwasher:
- Clean the outside with warm, soapy water. Open up and wipe down the inside.
Microwave Oven:
- Clean the inside and outside with warm, soapy water.
Bathroom
Shower and Bathtub:
- Clean with a non-abrasive spray Follow the directions given for the cleaner carefully. Be sure to clean fixtures and tiles also. The fixture should be shiny when done. The caulking around the tub may require several cleanings to remove soap scum and mildew.
Toilet:
- Clean tank, base, and outside surface of toilet with a non-abrasive cleaner. Use a commercial toilet bowl cleaner and brush to clean the inside of the toilet bowl.
Sink and Medicine Cabinet:
- Clean sink and fixtures using a non-abrasive cleaner. The fixtures should be shiny when thoroughly cleaned. Remove the shelves from the medicine cabinet and wipe the inside. Clean the glass shelves and outside mirror with a commercial glass cleaner. Thoroughly dry the shelves and return to the medicine cabinet.
All Floors
- Sweep floors thoroughly at least twice. Damp mop floors and allow to dry completely. Make sure to sweep underneath the heat convectors.
- The tape that is used to hold carpets and rugs need to be removed. Use soapy water and a sharp-edged scraper to scrape away tape residue. Then wipe this area and proceed with floor cleaning.
Carpet
- Clean carpet throughout using a vacuum cleaner. If in a furnished apartment, it is the resident's responsibility to vacuum all carpet, even if it is underneath furniture.
- ALL residents whose apartments come with carpeting will be assessed a fee for carpet shampooing at the time of check-out. Additional charges may be assessed if further damage to the carpet has occurred.
Walls
- Clean furniture marks, fingerprints, and dirty areas from the walls using a clean sponge with warm water and a commercial spray cleaner.
- To clean electrical outlets and light switches; first turn off the appropriate switch in the breaker box. Wipe outlet covers with a damp sponge and then wipe dry.
- Dust and clean with a wet or dry cloth all the ledges and heat convectors that line the apartment walls.
- To clean all door casings, wipe with clean warm water.
All Windows
- If you have installed a window air conditioner, Housing Maintenance will need to reinstall the window frame PRIOR to your check-out appointment time. Call 785-532-6466 to make an appointment with the Housing Maintenance Department.
- Clean all windows thoroughly and completely free of streaks by using a commercial glass cleaner and paper towels. Clean the ledges in between the bottom windows. All outside windows must be cleaned, except those on the back side of second floor.
Venetian Blinds:
- After removing any curtains or drapes you may have used, clean both sides of the blinds using a sponge, clean water and mild detergent. Wipe down a second time with clean, warm water (no soap) to be sure to remove all black marks, dust and dirt from along the blinds. Black marks created by the Venetian blinds on the window trim and around the win dow can be removed by wiping the area with warm, soapy water and a commercial spray cleaner.
- Clean the windowsills and trim and remove any black marks or dirt. Wipe the box unit and curtain rods with warm water.
Ceiling Fans
- Shut off power in the circuit breaker and use a damp cloth to dust off metal center of fan. Use a sponge and warm soapy water to wipe off blades, including tops, then wipe off with a clean, dry cloth.
Lights
- Clean all light fixtures and replace any burnt out bulbs.
Furnished Apartments
Furniture:
- Vinyl covered furniture should be cleaned with warm, soapy water then wiped clean a second time with water only making sure to remove all soap residue. Cloth covered furniture should be vacuumed well. Use warm water when cleaning tables, desks, desk drawers and chairs making sure table and chair legs have been cleaned too.
Beds:
- Cotton mattress covers should be laundered and plastic mattress covers should be wiped clean using warm water. There will be a charge if the mattress cover is missing.
Furniture Arrangement:
- Living Room- The sofa should be placed against the wall opposite the living room windows. The end table should be placed next to the sofa in the corner by the telephone jack and the coffee table should be in front of the sofa. Also, the two side chairs should be placed in front of the living room windows. The desk should be placed on the wall next to the windows.
- Kitchen- Kitchen chairs should be placed at the table and leaves should be left down
- Bedroom(s)- For one-bedroom apartments, bed and dresser should be arranged in the room. For two-bedroom apartments please place the second dresser in the second bedroom.
Storage Trunks & Storage Units
Storage Trunks:
- The storage trunks outside of your apartment should be thoroughly cleaned on the inside and out.
Storage Units:
- Storage units need to be empty and the floors need to be swept by the time of check-out.
General Information
- Tape residue on any surface (doors, walls, windows, etc.) needs to be removed by using cleaners such as WD-40 or Goo-Gone. After the tape has been removed with the cleaner, rinse the area with warm water.
- Always remember to wipe any surface dry after it has been cleaned with water or a moist cleaner. This will prevent streaking on the surface.
- When preparing to check-out, please remember that all personal belongings must be re moved. Your apartment and the area outside if should be cleared of all items. Leave the apartment in the same condition as when you moved into it. You will be charged for the removal and disposal of anything left behind. You will be assessed charges for unsatisfactory cleaning and/or damages. These charges will be added to your final bill and are due on the day of check-out.
- You may contact the custodial department by telephone at 785-532-6655 for further instructions on cleaning supplies and techniques.
- At check-out, please return your apartment and mailbox keys. A replacement fee will be charged for lost washhouse keys. Apartment and mailbox keys that are not turned in will result in a charge for a lock change and key replacement. All of these items MUST be turned in at the time of check-out. No extensions will be given.

Recommended & Prohibited Cleaning Supplies
Jardine Housekeeping recommends certain cleaning products that are safe to use on your bathroom and kitchen surfaces. Certain products are prohibited as they will wear away the surfaces in the bathrooms and kitchens. Please see the following list for recommended and prohibited cleaning products.
